On the western banks of the Hudson River, a two-story barn rises from the hillside in a long gabled form. Serving as guest quarters and additional living space for the nearby main house, the barn’s exterior siding, painted in ‘Newton’s Indigo,’ unifies the hillside homestead, where cutting gardens flourish throughout the property.
A Dutch entry door on the upper level opens to a mezzanine hallway, where afternoon light floods the double-height living space. Separate home offices, with writing desks oriented toward views of the Hudson River Valley, flank the central volume. Above, skylit sleeping lofts provide additional accommodations within each office.
On the ground level, a central living area combines dining and kitchen spaces lined with floor-to-ceiling walnut bookcases. A wood-burning fireplace becomes a sculptural focal point in the corner of the main room, set against a backdrop of terrazzo tile. The linear walnut kitchen provides generous counter space while allowing the copper sink to take center stage. Polished concrete floors extend throughout the level, continuing into a ground-floor bedroom concealed behind pocketing glass doors.
Throughout the barn, the owner’s art collection animates the walls, while eclectic wallpaper, inset within the trim, enlivens the ground-floor full bath and upper-level powder room. A corner stair, lined in a complementary flora-and-fauna-themed wall covering, features a window bump-out that frames views of the gardens beyond.
